MY POOR MARAT by Alexei Arbuzov (2013)
In 2013, Voyage Theater Company presented the first bilingual Russian/English production of the classic Soviet-era drama MY POOR MARAT by Aleksei Arbuzov. Directed by Wayne Maugans, the cast featured Sandra Glinka, Igor Semenov, and Arthur Kriklivy. Produced in English in 1967 under the title THE PROMISE, the play came to Broadway in 1967 in a production starring Eileen Atkins, Ian McKellen, and Ian McShane, closing after only two weeks.
In 2010 director Wayne Maugans was the recipient of a Likhachev Fellowship which allowed him to visit St. Petersburg for extensive research on the play, as well as the Siege of Leningrad during which it is set.
The VTC production was the first time the play was seen in New York in 46 years. With the title restored to the original Russian MY POOR MARAT, a new English translation by Oleg Ivanov was commissioned. Mr. Ivanov also provided dramaturgy for the production. Stass Klassen was Assistant Director/Dialect Coach.
